Your GitHub profile is a goldmine of career evidence that you are almost certainly ignoring.

Every commit, pull request, code review, and issue thread contains signals about what you can do, how deeply you understand it, and how you work with others. The problem is that nobody reads raw commit histories. Not you, not recruiters, not hiring managers. The evidence is there, but it is buried.

This post is a systematic method for extracting verifiable skill claims from your GitHub activity and translating them into the kind of evidence that strengthens résumés, skill graphs, and interview answers.

Why GitHub evidence matters

Self-reported skill claims are everywhere. "Deep expertise in Python." "Experienced with distributed systems." "Strong communicator." There is no way to verify any of these from a résumé alone.

GitHub evidence changes that equation. When you say "I designed a data pipeline in Python," a recruiter can look at the repository. When you say "I led a major refactoring effort," they can see the pull request, the review threads, and the merge history.

Skills-based hiring research consistently shows that demonstrated skills predict job performance far better than credentials alone. But the prediction only works if the skills are real, verified through evidence rather than claimed on paper. GitHub is one of the few places where that evidence exists in a structured, timestamped, and public format.

The problem with raw GitHub profiles

So if GitHub is full of evidence, why do most engineers not use it effectively?

Volume. An active engineer might have thousands of commits across dozens of repositories. No one is reading through them.

Context collapse. A commit message like "fix auth bug" tells you almost nothing about the skill involved. Was it a CSRF vulnerability? An OAuth integration? A session handling edge case? The message does not say.

Open source is not professional work. Most engineers do their best work in private repositories for their employer. What is public on GitHub is often side projects, tutorials, and contributions that do not represent peak capability.

This is a pattern we see repeatedly: engineers with 4+ years of contributions who cannot quickly point to the right PRs when a recruiter asks "can you walk me through something you built?" Everything blurs together without a system for extracting the signal.

The solution is not to rely on someone reading your GitHub profile. The solution is to extract the signals yourself, translate them into skill claims, and attach them as evidence in your skill graph or résumé.

The extraction method

Step 1: Audit your repositories

Start by listing your repositories, both public and private (you have access to your own). For each repository, answer three questions:

  1. What was the project's purpose? Not the README description, but the real problem it solved.
  2. What was your role? Sole author? Lead? Contributor? Be honest: "I made a small UI fix" is different from "I designed the component architecture."
  3. What skills did this require? Think in capabilities, not technologies. "Designed a RESTful API" is a skill claim. "Used Express.js" is just a tool.

Aim for your top 5-10 repositories, the ones where you did meaningful, non-trivial work.

Step 2: Mine your pull requests

Pull requests are the richest source of skill evidence on GitHub. They show:

  • What you changed: the diff itself demonstrates technical knowledge.
  • Why you changed it: the PR description (if well-written) shows reasoning and context.
  • How others responded: review comments reveal whether your approach was accepted, challenged, or praised.
  • Scope of impact: files changed, lines modified, and tests added show the breadth of your work.

For each significant PR, extract claims in this format:

Skill: [capability name] Claim: [one sentence describing what you did] Evidence: [link to PR + summary of what the diff shows] Depth indicator: [exposure / working / proficient / expert, based on the complexity]

Here is what a completed claim looks like:

Skill: API design Claim: Designed and implemented a versioned REST API with pagination, filtering, and rate limiting. Evidence: Added 12 endpoints with OpenAPI docs, request validation, and error handling middleware. Reviewed and approved by 2 senior engineers. Depth indicator: Proficient (independently designed, made architectural decisions, handled edge cases).

Step 3: Analyse your code reviews

This is the step most engineers skip, and it is a mistake.

Reviews you give are as valuable as code you write. They show depth of understanding (catching subtle bugs, suggesting architectural improvements), communication skill (how you phrase feedback), and breadth of knowledge (reviewing code outside your primary domain).

Search your GitHub review history. Look for reviews where you:

  • Identified a significant bug before it shipped
  • Suggested an alternative approach that was adopted
  • Asked questions that surfaced hidden requirements
  • Provided guidance to a more junior engineer

Each of these is a skill signal. Some of the strongest "system design" and "mentorship" evidence comes not from writing code but from reviewing it. A review that catches a race condition in a payment flow is more compelling evidence of distributed systems understanding than most code written that quarter.

Step 4: Track patterns across time

Individual commits are noise. Patterns are signal.

If you contributed to the same system over 6 months, that shows sustained depth, not just a drive-by fix. If you progressively took on more complex features in a repository, that shows growth. If your review comments evolved from "looks good" to substantive architectural feedback, that shows increasing expertise.

Look for:

  • Sustained contributions to a single repository (depth signal)
  • Increasing complexity over time (growth signal)
  • Cross-repository patterns: similar skills applied in different contexts (versatility signal)
  • Ownership indicators: being the primary reviewer, being mentioned in issues, being assigned as code owner

Translating signals into skill graph evidence

Once you have extracted your claims, attach them to the relevant nodes in your skill graph. Each skill node should link to specific, verifiable evidence.

A well-evidenced skill node looks like this:

Compare that to a résumé bullet that says "Experienced with database optimisation." The résumé bullet is a claim. The skill graph entry, backed by GitHub evidence, is proof.

What about private repositories?

Most engineers do their best work behind corporate firewalls. You cannot link to private PRs in a public profile. But you can describe the work structurally without revealing proprietary details. "Redesigned the authentication flow for a B2B SaaS platform, reducing login failures by 35%" gives evidence without exposing code. You can also replicate patterns in public projects: if you optimised database queries at work, build a sample repository demonstrating the same techniques on a public dataset.

The goal is not to make everything public. The goal is to know what your evidence is, so you can reference it with precision when it matters.

Common mistakes

Listing tools instead of skills. "Used React" is not a skill claim. "Built a component library with compound components, context-based state management, and automated visual regression testing" is.

Over-indexing on activity metrics. 1,000 commits and 500 PRs do not mean 1,000 skills. Most of those commits repeat the same capabilities. Focus on the 10-15 strongest evidence points, not the highest numbers.

Ignoring review evidence. Engineers often only look at code they wrote. Code reviews show understanding, communication, and mentorship, which are the skills that differentiate senior engineers from mid-level ones.

Claiming depth you cannot defend. If you list "expert" depth in system design but your evidence is a single PR that added a caching layer, the claim will collapse in an interview. Be honest about your depth and let the evidence support it.
